General Activity Description

A seven-day intensive practical course for dance teachers delivering Intermediate-level contemporary dance classes for students aged 13 and above. The training covers intermediate technical frameworks, floor work, release technique, improvisation, choreography creation, teenage body conditioning, exam assessment standards and artistic expression training for teen and young adult contemporary dancers.

Aims

  1. To help participants fully grasp the complete technical system, assessment criteria and artistic core requirements of the Intermediate contemporary dance syllabus for learners aged 13+.

  2. To equip teachers with professional teaching skills to guide teenagers through core intermediate contemporary techniques, including spinal articulation, floor work, fall-and-recovery, weight shift and dynamic movement control.

  3. To build educators’ ability to adapt training for adolescent physical characteristics, such as rapid bone growth, muscle imbalance, limited core stability and high risks of soft tissue strain.

  4. To cultivate trainees’ competence in integrating technical drills, guided improvisation and original choreography creation into systematic contemporary dance lessons.

  5. To develop targeted coaching strategies for formal Intermediate contemporary assessments, focusing on movement authenticity, emotional expression, spatial awareness and performance logic.

  6. To master scientific injury prevention, warm-up and rehabilitation routines specific to contemporary dance’s high-impact floor and dynamic movement training.

  7. To learn empathetic classroom management methods to relieve teenagers’ performance anxiety, creative block and training burnout, while guiding their independent artistic thinking.

  8. To provide basic directional guidance for students with vocational dance aspirations, covering contemporary audition skills and advanced training pathways.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this 7-day practical training, participants will be able to:

  1. Fully interpret all compulsory technical sequences, movement modules and assessment rubrics within the Intermediate contemporary dance syllabus.

  2. Deliver accurate verbal and physical corrections for core intermediate techniques: release work, contraction/relaxation, floor transitions, travelling sequences, jumps and controlled falls.

  3. Design progressive, complete lesson plans that balance technical conditioning, improvisation exercises, motif development and exam repertoire polishing.

  4. Adjust training intensity and movement modifications to accommodate teenage growth spurts, joint tightness and uneven strength development.

  5. Systematically prepare students for Intermediate contemporary assessments, evaluating movement dynamics, emotional storytelling, spatial usage and performance consistency.

  6. Identify early warning signs of contemporary dance common injuries (knee strain, lower back soreness, ankle tightness) and implement targeted conditioning and recovery drills.

  7. Lead structured improvisation sessions to develop students’ individual movement style, creativity and spontaneous artistic expression.

  8. Guide students to construct short original choreographies using learned movement motifs, with clear structural logic and personalised emotional themes.

  9. Conduct objective individual progress evaluations, formulate personalised improvement plans and deliver balanced, motivational feedback for teenage contemporary dancers.

  10. Manage mature teenage classroom dynamics, ease peer competition pressure and help students overcome creative and performance mental barriers.

Recommended Preparation

  1. Revise basic contemporary dance terminology and foundational techniques suitable for Grades 3–5 before the training, to smoothly follow intermediate advanced technical sessions.

  2. Learn fundamental knowledge of adolescent musculoskeletal development, as well as high-risk injury types caused by floor work and dynamic contemporary movements.

  3. Prepare flexible, stretchable professional dance wear, dance socks and knee pads for long hours of floor work practice and mock teaching demonstrations.

  4. Listen to mainstream intermediate contemporary exam music and minimalist, experimental dance tracks to prepare for rhythm and improvisation workshops.

  5. Carry notebooks, pens and optional recording equipment to record technical standards, correction skills and ready-to-use lesson frameworks.

  6. Teachers with intermediate contemporary teaching experience should sort out typical student challenges: stiff spinal mobility, poor dynamic control, creative block or exam nervousness for group sharing and discussion.

  7. Maintain regular stretching and core conditioning before attendance; the course involves heavy physical practical drills, peer demonstration and simulated teaching.

  8. Preview the official Intermediate contemporary syllabus summary (if available) and list questions about technical standards and assessment rules for Q&A sessions.

Be ready to join peer mock teaching activities, including demonstrating movement corrections and delivering short segments of intermediate contemporary classes to other trainees.
